Risks and consequences may apply to any treatment, in particular tooth extraction. These will be informed to you in person after assessment as every case is different. A second opinion may be recommended when considering complex treatment. A referral to a specialist may be required in certain situations

With our warm, welcoming service and access to pain-relieving Penthrox inhalant for those feeling anxious about their dental treatment, patients can rest in the knowledge that they’re receiving quality services from us. We’ll help you to feel at ease, talking you through any risks that may apply to your treatment, and referring you to a trusted specialist in some cases.

1. Badly broken tooth causing pain requiring extraction
2. Impacted wisdom tooth causing pain

Do you need tooth removal treatment?

Before removing teeth, we’ll explore other treatment options to try to save the tooth wherever possible. However, you may require extraction if you’re suffering from:

Extensive trauma to the tooth following an injury

Severely decayed or broken teeth

Severe gum disease that cannot be otherwise treated

Overcrowding in the mouth

Note the minimal remaining tooth structure left. This tooth cannot be successfully restored effectively and requires extraction

Note how the lower wisdom tooth is erupting into the adjacent molar. The patient was complaining of occasional severe pain and swelling in the gums at the back of his mouth

What does the procedure involve?

During a tooth extraction procedure, we’ll remove the tooth from its socket in the bone. Many people expect the treatment to be painful or highly uncomfortable, which can cause anxiety and lead to people delaying their appointment. Understanding what’s involved in the treatment and how we maximise comfort to patients can help ease stress.

In most instances, we can perform the procedure in our Sydney clinic, and can refer you to a specialist for more complex cases. The patient will usually be awake for the process, which involves:

We numb the area using a local an aesthetic injection

We apply pressure to the problem tooth to loosen it within the socket

Once the tooth is sufficiently loose, we use forceps to remove it from the socket

Should the tooth shatter during the procedure, we’ll remove all remaining fragments separately

Afterwards, you may feel pain or sensitivity for a few days, with full healing taking a few weeks. Your dentist will provide you with a comprehensive aftercare guide for a more comfortable, faster healing process.

Wisdom tooth extraction

If you’re experiencing pain or swelling in the back of your mouth, this could be caused by wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth usually emerge between the ages of 17 and 25, and improper eruption can cause them to move in the wrong direction. This can result in impacted wisdom teeth, which can cause posterior gum inflammation (pericoronitis), pain when eating and even fever.

If you’re experiencing pain or other symptoms and are based in Macquarie Park, Marsfield or nearby Sydney suburbs, don’t delay in making an appointment. Removing any decayed or problematic teeth will prevent infection from spreading. Our experienced dentists will carry out a comprehensive diagnosis and assessment to determine if your wisdom teeth can be extracted without substantial complications, and are able to perform the procedure here at Marsfield Dental Care once you’re happy.
