You’ve been brushing your teeth twice daily for as long as you can remember (hopefully), but are you doing it correctly? If you didn’t learn the correct oral hygiene habits when you were young, you might be brushing your teeth too roughly, too softly or not often enough to fight tooth decay and gum disease.

Don’t worry! Marsfield Dental Care, the top dentist in Sydney, is here to fix that. In this article, we’re discussing the right way of brushing, how long you should brush, how to properly brush teeth with braces, and more. Let’s dive into Brushing 101.

The Right Way of Brushing Your Teeth

Brushing your teeth may seem easy and routine, but there’s an art and a science to doing it correctly. Here’s what our dental office in Sydney recommends:

  • Hold your toothbrush at a 45º angle to your gums.
  • Maintaining that angle, move the brush back and forth in short motions.
  • Start with the outer tooth surfaces.
  • To clean the inner surfaces, hold the brush vertically and move it up and down.
  • Clean the chewing surfaces.
  • Don’t forget to brush your tongue! The tongue is a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria.

How Long Should I Brush My Teeth For?

You may read the instructions above and think you can knock that out in under a minute. In reality, you should spend roughly two minutes brushing your teeth twice a day.

Take your time brushing each tooth. Sometimes, if you try going too quickly, you brush harder too, scratching the enamel and damaging the gums. Remember, when it comes to brushing your teeth, harder does not equal better!

How to Properly Brush Teeth with Braces

When you have braces, maintaining proper oral hygiene is more important than ever before. Overall, you’ll use the same method that you would without braces. The only major difference is that you treat the enamel above your braces and below your braces as two separate sections.

Now, you may be asking, “How long should I brush my teeth for with braces?” The good news is that the length of time you spend caring for your teeth with braces is only a little longer than without.

  • Brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day.
  • Floss your teeth daily. Flossing might take a bit longer with braces!
  • Use an interdental brush to brush between your archwires and clean those surfaces.
